“…The guitar work is stellar. It’s intricate without being overwhelming, and it fits the songs perfectly. His vocals are soothing, passionate without being overt, and the content of his lyrics are worthy of the best of Folk’s traditions.” ~ livejournal.com

TORONTO – TUESDAY, OCTOBER 28TH, 2008 – PHILLIP BROWN will release his third album WINTER HYMN at Hugh’s room backed by seasoned bass player David Woodhead and outstanding percussionist Trish MacAulay. The prolific and imaginative Dom Deluca will take the stage at 8:30 pm for an opening set.

The enormously talented PHILLIP BROWN has a new album called WINTER HYMN, an intimate yet brawny take on seasonal emotions. Wise beyond his years, he has already fulfilled his dream to serve his country in Afghanistan, and now he's returned in one piece to unveil his latest batch of raw, honest and evocative songs.

Influenced by his father's love of music and the likes of Canada's folk elite -- Gordon Lightfoot, Bruce Cockburn and the late Stan Rogers -- the 23-year-old Brown has been writing songs since he was fifteen.

Born and raised in Toronto, his father taught him to play guitar at the age of nine and he hasn't been able to put it down since. In 2004 he took the bull by the horns and began work on his first recording At Home, which he released in 2006. Later that same year Phil followed this release with a second entitled Café Mirage, from which the song “Sometimes” was nominated for an Ontario Independent Music Award.

Winter Hymn, Phillip’s third studio album, was produced by award-winning producer Paul Mills. Phil wanted to make the album the best that it could be, so with the help of Mills he recruited David Woodhead and renowned guitarist Jason Fowler. Mills, aka Curly Boy Stubbs, also tastefully enhanced the album with his mandolin magic. Brown’s refreshing and smooth “folky” vocals whisper Lightfoot and wrap around his introspective lyrics with the strength and confidence of a veteran. Thoughtful and passionate, Winter Hymn contains some of Phil’s best songwriting yet. Each song is a gem full of ideas about living in the city, travelling through Ontario -- as per the album title --they contain vivid imagery of winter landscapes.

Not only a skillful songwriter, Brown has also been impressing audiences and industry professionals with his dexterous guitar playing and unique style of finger-picking. Mills adds “It was a delight to work with Phillip Brown on Winter Hymn. His songs are imbued with great musicianship, a warm and engaging voice and some of the fanciest guitar picking I've heard in a while." Honing his skills further by continuous touring, his "one man band" style (more of a flamenco style, where he plays rhythm and bass parts with the thumb and everything else with the fingers) has become ingrained in his overall performances.

Accompanying Brown at the release performance will be the brilliant David Woodhead on bass and killer percussionist Trish MacAulay.

Inspired by Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zandt and Ron Sexsmith, late bloomer DOM DELUCA taught himself how to play guitar, sing and compose songs and took it all on as if it was the only thing that mattered.

Deluca writes songs about lovers, both real and imagined, both idealized and cut down to size - songs of hope and happiness - of cynicism, sadness and disgust, plenty of disgust. His style – classic singer-songwriter – soft and delicate one moment and loud and rousing the next. Audiences will be captured by his emotionally revealing lyrics and catchy, well-crafted melodies.
